Standard Bed Sheet Sizes: A Complete Guide

Standard Bed Sheet Sizes: A Complete Guide

If you’re looking for a complete guide on standard bed sheet sizes, you came to the right place.

Read on to learn the typical sizes and things to consider before buying your new sheets.

Why Do Bed Sheet Sizes Matter?

Hard to find bed sheet sizes

If you have a thick foam mattress topper or use a pillow-top mattress, finding the right bedding size is frustrating.

The label of a fitted sheet says it should fit your bed, but it barely hugs the corners of the mattress.

Locating the right sheet size and pocket depth (the depth of a fitted sheet or the mattress thickness it will cover) will solve that problem.

We wanted to help simplify things a bit, so we created this bed sheet size guide. It lists every sheet size and option available in the U.S., along with the proper mattress size each one should be used with.

Take a look and find out the perfect size sheets for your bed, from cribs and dorm beds to the extra-large California King!

Standard Bed Sheet Sizes

From the smallest to the biggest mattresses available, these are the dimensions of standard bed sheet sizes you’ll come across, along with the size mattress they are designed to fit.

We’ve also included dimensions for other bedding items that are sized to fit, like comforters and pillowcases.

Crib, Cradle, Bassinet, or Toddler

Crib mattresses are the same size as toddler mattresses.

Because they’re small and of a uniform thickness, most crib-fitted sheets don’t include a depth measurement. On average, crib mattresses are 5″ to 6″ deep.

  • Mattress size: 27″ x 52″
  • Bed sheet sizes
    • Flat or top sheet: 45″ x 60″
    • Fitted sheet: 28″ x 52″
    • Pillowcase: 13″ x 18″ (Toddler or Travel)
    • Quilt/Duvet/Comforter: 45″ x 60″

Twin, Single

Twin beds, the next size up from a crib mattress, use twin-size sheets and typically require a standard or deep pocket sheet.

  • Mattress size: 39″ x 75″
  • Bed sheet sizes
    • Flat or top sheet: 72″ x 102″
    • Fitted sheet: 39″ x 76″ x 14″

    • Quilt/Duvet/Comforter: 80″ x 106″

Twin XL, Extra Long, or Split King

Twin XL beds are the same width as a twin, but as an XL, they are 5″ longer.

These will not fit a twin XL bed; only twin XL sheets will. Twin XLs are commonly used on dorm room beds.

  • Mattress size: 36″ x 39″ x 80″
  • Bed sheet sizes
    • Flat or top sheet: 72″ x 114″
    • Fitted sheet: 39″ x 80″ x 14″
    • Pillowcase: 20″ x 26″ (Standard)
    • Quilt/Duvet/Comforter: 80″ x 106″

Full, Standard, or Double

    • Fitted sheet: 54″ x 76″ x 15″

  • Bed sheet sizes
    • Flat or top sheet: 102″ x 108″

Fitted Sheet Sizes and Depths

The other measurement included for fitted sheet size is depth.

Because mattresses are made in standard sizes but vary in thickness, fitted sheets use a measurement that flat sheets don’t.

It’s called “pocket depth,” and it ensures a snug fit with mattresses that have standard, deep, and extra-deep thickness.

Keep in mind that beds with mattress toppers and pillow tops will likely need deep-pocketed or extra-deep-pocketed fitted sheets.

Fitted Sheet Pocket Depths:

  • Standard pocket: 7″ to 9″ deep
  • Deep pocket: 10″ to 13″ deep
  • Extra-deep pocket: 14″ to 22″ deep

Hard-to-Find Sheet Sizes

It’s difficult to find bed sheet sets that aren’t one of the standard sizes (like Twin XL, Full XL, and RV queen and king), so knowing these measurements is essential.

In a pinch, you can swap sheets with the next standard size up to get a decent, but not perfect, fit.

While a top sheet or comforter that is slightly too large won’t be noticed much, fitted sheets that don’t fit snugly won’t be comfortable to sleep on.

Finally, for antique beds and others that may not fit the standard sheet size chart, custom-sized sheets ordered using the exact measurements of your mattress can be a good, if slightly costly, solution.
