Walmart is known for having just about any item you could want to buy, so it’s great that they have an easy return policy for both in-store and online purchases. Most items can be returned within a 90-day window, but there are exceptions.
You might not realize that you can get a full refund for certain items past the 90 days, or that you can exchange items you’re not completely satisfied with. Some categories have to be returned within 14 or 30 days.
And a few items can’t be returned at all. Information on the return and exchange policy is available on the Walmart website. However, we’ve compiled it all into clear sections so you can quickly find the policy that applies to your items.
Look below to find the full return policy at Walmart, different return time limits, how to get a refund, items you can’t return, and how to return items with no receipt.
What Is the Walmart Return Policy?
Walmart’s general return policy is simple. If you bought an item in-store or on Walmart.com, you can usually return or exchange it within 90 days with or without a receipt.
Items can be returned either in-store, by mail, or with a free home pickup. When you return an item to the store, through the mail, or with home pickup, you’ll need to provide the receipt or online order number to get a refund.
The refund will be applied to your original form of payment. So if you paid with cash when you bought the item, you’d get a cash refund. There are exceptions to this policy, though. We’ve outlined all the different policies and return windows below.
Walmart’s Holiday Extended Return Policy
Walmart has an extended holiday return policy to make it easy for customers to return or exchange items they’ve purchased during the gifting season.
The return window is extended for products purchased from October 16th through December 25th. Here’s a guide to when items purchased during this time can be returned:
- 14 days: Return by January 8
- 30 days: Return by January 24
- 60 days: February 23
- 90 days: 90 days from date of delivery/purchase
Most electronics purchased from October 16th through December 25th won’t begin their return period (usually 30 days from the date of purchase) until December 26th.
Cell phones (non-prepaid) purchased in-store and online still have a 14-day return period under the holiday return policy, beginning the date of purchase.
Walmart Return Process: How to Return Items
Returning items is a straight-forward process at Walmart. Here’s what you can expect when you return something in-store or online.
How to Return Online Purchases
For online purchases, you can start the return in the Walmart app or on your Walmart.com account, then have an employee help you complete the process in the store. Or, you can complete the entire return process online and through the mail. Here’s how it works.
To start the return online and return an online purchase to a Walmart near you:
- Log into your account.
- Go to your orders and choose the item that you want to return.
- Select a reason for return, then choose the “Return to store” option.
This will generate a return barcode. Click submit, then check your email for a confirmation notice. Bring the email with you to the store with the item (either on your smartphone or printed out) to complete the return in-store.
To complete the return process online and through the mail:
- Log into your account.
- Go to your orders and choose the item that you want to return.
- Choose a reason for return and select either Return or Replacement, then click Continue.
- Choose the Return by Mail option, review the refund or replace options, and click Finish.
If you chose a return, you’ll get an email with a return shipping label. Print this out, package the item for return, and drop the item off at any USPS or FedEx location.
If you’re unable to print the label, you may be able to drop the packaged item off at a Walmart store. You’ll see whether your item is eligible for this during the returns process online.
How to Return In-Store Purchases
You can return in-store purchases to any Walmart location in most cases. Just bring the item and its original packaging along with your receipt to the Customer Service desk.
An employee will complete the return and issue your refund in the form of original payment (if within the return period).
Walmart.com Marketplace Returns
Walmart’s online Marketplace is made up of thousands of individual sellers with their own return policies. You’ll have to check with the seller of the item you want to return to get specific information on their return policy.
For the most part, Marketplace items can be returned within 30 days of delivery. Here’s how Marketplace returns work:
To start your return:
- Log into your Walmart account within the 30 day return period.
- Choose the item purchased and follow the prompts to move through the return process.
- Box the item up with all the accessories and packaging it came with originally.
- Print the provided return label, then drop the item off at a FedEx location.
Alternatively, you may be able to skip printing the return label and instead bring the packaged item to a Walmart store.
For luxury Marketplace items, like gemstones, fine art, jewelry and watches over $300, collectibles, and precious metals, there’s a shorter return window of 14 days.
Walmart recommends taking photos of the item before returning to keep for your records and carefully package the item to prevent shipping damage. You should insure items worth more than $500.
Once the Marketplace seller receives and validates the return, you will receive the refund within ten business days.
How to Exchange or Replace an Item
If you don’t want to return an item for a refund or gift card, you can usually exchange or replace it. Follow these guidelines to exchange or replace a Walmart item.
If you purchased an item in-store, you’ll need to bring it to a local Walmart to exchange it for another. Bring the item and the original packaging with your receipt to any Walmart location.
Stop by the Customer Service desk with the item and your receipt. An employee will allow you to select a replacement of the item and exchange them.
If you purchased an item on Walmart.com (not the Walmart Marketplace) that arrived damaged or wasn’t what you ordered, you can return the item by mail for a replacement.
Go to your account on Walmart.com or on the app to start the returns process and print a free shipping label. Easy step-by-step instructions will guide you through the process online.
If you chose a replacement, you’ll get a confirmation email with the tracking number for the replacement item and a shipping label so you can return the wrong or damaged item.
If you’d rather not mail the item and get a replacement, you can bring it to a Walmart location near you for a refund as long as it isn’t damaged. If the item is damaged, you won’t be able to exchange or replace it in-store. You’ll have to mail it in.
Can I Return Items to Walmart Without a Receipt?
You can return or exchange items at Walmart without a receipt by following these steps.
- Bring a valid, current photo ID and the item with the original packaging.
- An employee will go through the refund verification process and attempt to find the order number or receipt based on your date of purchase or the credit or debit card you used to pay.
- Or, they’ll look up an email or phone number you used to make the purchase online.
Without a receipt or if the cashier can’t locate your order through these means, you have three refund options:
- Exchange the item for another identical item.
- Get a refund in cash if the item is less than $25.
- Get a Walmart gift card if the item is over $25.
How to Get a Refund at Walmart
Returning an item results in a refund as long as you start the return within the allowable time period. Your refund will be issued in the same method of payment you used originally, unless you do not have a receipt.
In that case, you may receive a cash or gift card refund regardless of your original payment method.
Cash or check purchases that are returned will be refunded in cash. Recalled items brought in for a return (regardless of condition) are also refunded in cash, no matter how you originally paid for the item.
Credit card purchases that are returned will be credited back to the card within 7-10 business days. You will need to present the actual card to the customer service employee to have the refund credited to the card if you initiate a return in-store. If you can’t present the card, you’ll get a Walmart gift card loaded with the refund instead.
Debit card purchases (receipt should show “debit tend”) returned will be credited back to the card within 5-7 business days. In some cases, a cash refund can be processed instead if you’d prefer.
Gift card purchases that are returned will have the refund either applied back to your original gift card (for online returns) or a new gift card (for in-store returns).
Exceptions to the 90 Day Return Policy
The Walmart 90 day return policy does have some exceptions. Certain item categories have shorter or longer return windows, return requirements, and limitations. Here’s what you should know about the exceptions to the return policy.
- The first thing to note is that Walmart has the final say on whether an item can be returned or exchanged, even if it meets all of their posted requirements.
- If you do not have a receipt for the purchase, they reserve the right to start a refund verification process. A store manager can accept or reject any return.
14 Day Returns and Exchanges
While most items have a 90-day return window, a few must be returned or exchanged within 14 days. This includes:
- Undamaged prepaid cell phones
- Undamaged contract cell phones
Opened or used cell phones that are “unlocked” can’t be returned for a refund, but they can be exchanged for another item of the same value if you have the receipt.

- Music players
- Video game consoles
- Audio equipment
